Gentleness

What does it truly mean to be gentle? At first glance, gentleness might seem like a single, simple quality, but a closer look at Colossians 3 reveals something far richer. Gentleness is woven together with compassion, kindness, humility, and patience, forming a way of life rather than just a personality trait. This message draws us into the heart of what it means to clothe ourselves, deliberately and intentionally, with the character of Christ. Just as we plan what we wear based on the conditions of the day, we are called to make purposeful choices about the attitudes and actions we bring into every moment. The spiritual life is not passive. It is a daily decision to set our hearts and minds on things above, as Colossians 3:1-2 urges, and to let that reorientation reshape everything about how we treat the people around us. If we find ourselves wondering why gentleness feels so difficult to sustain, this exploration of Scripture offers a compelling answer: we cannot consistently give what we have not first received and chosen to put on.
